The dogs were cool and it's nice to have a strong female protagonist.I didn't realize that this was book two in a 3 part series until now. Usually, it's the first book that is free, to entice you to read the rest. At least that explains the total lack of character development. That being said, even if it's the second book there should be some kind of review of the circumstances that got the characters to where they are just in case you missed the first one. Without that, you're lost and have little desire to read it. I almost left it after the first third because it just wasn't coming together. The story line was way too predictable and, frankly, unbelievable.

Death in the Dark is the second book in the Sydney Rye mystery series written by author Emily Kimelman.
I enjoyed the growth of Sydney in this book. Her work to better learn her trade and the compassion she has for those less fortunate. Looking forward to book 3.
I read the first book of the series because it was free, it was okay, I bought this 2nd book to see how Sydney grows and develops. She doesn't, she remains the same dumb, impetuous person she was in the first book. After everything that happens in book one, you'd think she would realize her teachers know more than she, but she still think she knows better than they. I won't be reading anymore in the series.
Another exciting book in the series. I could do without the f word but I still want to continue the series to see what comes next.
I really enjoyed the three books in this series. I got the first one free and bought the next two right away. This one is a short story that transitions Sydney Rye (Joy Humboldt) from her old life into her new life.
In this series the author moves Sydney from a very mundane life in New York through a number of complex murders/mysteries that take her to South America and England. Sydney is a complex person and the author does a nice job of evolving her character. The supporting characters add a lot to supporting the stories, particularly Mulberry who is in all the books. She also has a large dog (Blue) who is her constant companion and saves her life a number of times throughout the series,. Although this series has some sad parts, particularly the first book, the series shows how a person can overcome adversity and become a strong independent person.
I really enjoyed the series. There are emotional ups and downs and a lot of mystery and murder thrown in. For anyone who enjoys women solving mysteries, you should enjoy this series.
Absolutely love this series I read every one of them and am waiting for the next to be published .. I love the main character. You must read the first book in the series to really understand though..as that book is very different from the rest and is used as the spin off to her journey in the next books. I love her character. If you are reader looking for something that has to be more like actual life then this is not for you - I enjoy reading fiction and the possibility of the impossible. It bothers me when reviewers of fiction critique as too far fetched or not real enough ..isn't what we are reading fiction? meaning..not real and while some can sound too far fetched I do not think that takes away from the story. Fiction comes in many different flavors and I enjoy many.
This was a great read! This was a short read but all the action and adventure was still there. Let me say this is a book for 18+ readers. There is some language and some violence, so please know that before hand instead of leaving a bad review for content. The plot was great, which I won't give away. I will say Sydney is still a strong female character and Blue is right by her side. It is nice to see a strong female character instead of a bumbling idiot. The plot was strong with action and adventure and a great ending. The characters are well developed and very real, flaws and all. If you are looking for a book that will grab you from the first page, take you through twists and turns and keep you reading to see what happens next, this is a book for you.
This could be a stand alone but I do suggest you read Unleashed first. You will see why Sydney is who she is and why she makes the decisions she makes.
I stumbled onto the Sydney Rye series and I'm glad I did. I can't wait to read the rest in the series. A great read that I would highly recommend to others!
