History of the United States, Volume IV by Elisha Benjamin Andrews covers most of the Civil War, Reconstruction, the settlement of the Plains, and the Second Industrial Revolution. The original text was written in 1894, with some small adjustments added for the revised version of 1903.
The content of Period IV relates to the Civil War and Reconstruction. The account of the Civil War may be acceptable for students wishing to read a general history of the war, but if you have read the military histories by Bruce Catton or Shelby Foote, you will notice obvious omissions and errors. For example, Joseph E. Johnston attacked Averasboro in 1865 - one of the battles in the Bentonville campaign - although in this volume it is spelled `Averysboro', N. C.' There is, however, something different in the way that Andrews organizes the campaigns into western, central, and eastern districts.
Most of the content in Period V relates to the Second Industrial Revolution. The best account of the Age of Capitalism can be found in the book America in the Gilded Age by Sean Cashman or in American Colossus by H.W. Brands. The light bulb, the Great Chicago Fire, the Fisk - Gould corner of Gold, Bell's telephone, Elevated railways in Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Panic of 1873, and the Centennial Exposition of 1873 are events that are described in both books, and here.
There were a couple of issues emphasized by Andrews that are no longer considered in surveys of American history. One wonders if the issues between England and America after the Civil War have been `played down' in modern accounts of history because England and America became allies during the 20th century. An entire chapter of this book is devoted to the Alabama Claims, while another chapter is devoted to the issue of the Fisheries. After the American Revolution, America had been granted the privilege of fishing in Newfoundland because the seas were considered the richest in the world for catching fish, and the livelihood of many New England fishermen depended upon this privilege. America and England locked heads over this privilege several times in the 19th century.
The story of The West, as presented here, is not sufficient. Little is mentioned of the cattle industry, or the cattle towns of Abilene, Ellsworth, and Dodge. The Range Wars, particularly the violent one in Johnson County WY, had just occurred and were not mentioned. As is usually the case with history, it sometimes takes a few years for events to shake out before the story can be effectively told.
The story of Reconstruction had not completed. At the time, people thought Reconstruction was over after the Compromise of 1877. Congress did not pass any legislation after the Compromise, and the southern state governments were all `redeemed' by Democrats after federal troops left the south. However, Jim Crow laws were not ubiquitous when this history was written in 1894 and the issue was too complex to make minor changes to the text when the book was revised in 1903.
The story of the red man also received the short stick. The final chapter of the book concludes that the Dawes Acts offered more humane treatment to the Indian than ever. These acts and their goals were repudiated and reversed in the 1930s. This volume did not tell the history of the vanquishing of the Plains Tribes during the second half of the 19th century.
The volumes by Andrews are not a great place to learn about history but they can add on to what you have learned elsewhere. Particularly impressive are the sketches and pictures that accompany the text. Political cartoons make so much more sense if you can recognize the men depicted in the cartoon.
There are about ten errors in the book transcribed by Project Gutenberg. The errors are annoying but not too significant. One of the problems with e-books is that tables are not formatted properly. See the table on Property Valuation in Period V, Chapter 5.
These volumes by Andrews could be more useful had there been links from the table of contents to the text. There could also be links from the listing of pictures in the table of contents to the text. If you download Volume 6 of this history by Andrews from Project Gutenberg, you can see the types of hyperlink capabilities that make these volumes more useful. This volume by Andrews, as well as the other five volumes of the `History of the United States' series, are available for free on Project Gutenberg.
